In any work of writing an author has to use humor or literary devices to get his or her point across. A literary device is a technique used by an author to produce a special effect on his or her writing. On November 30th, 1835 a great author was born. His real name was Samuel Clemens, but went by a pen name of â€Å"Mark Twain†. For his time no one wrote like Twain because of his unique use of literary devices. His writing was hilarious and told the truth. There are three main ways that Mark Twain uses these different devices. Twain specifically uses the literary elements of tone, hyperboles and understatements. A second example from â€Å"Roughing It† that shows his joking, but true tone is on page 710 of â€Å"Roughing It† lines 78-86, when Twain writes; â€Å"...and the universal navy revolver - slung to my belt. But I secured a more conservative costume and discarded the revolver. I never had occasion to kill anybody, nor ever felt a desire to do so, but had worn the thing in deference to popular sentiment, and in order that I might not, by it’s, be offensively conspicuous and subject of remark.† This quote is related to his outfit and how he had worn the revolver then gotten rid of it but first had worn it in front of everyone so he wouldn’t feel out of place. This shows Twain’s joking but, real tone because he is joking about his fear that he would be stereotyped for not wearing a revolver. Twain uses hyperboles to be funny, and he can use tone to be funny and serious, but when he uses his great hyperboles, he is only being humorous. The enrollment rate in our primary school five years ago, was 90 percent. Last year, it dropped to 83 percent, and the number is rising. School non-completion affects so many things. It increases criminal activity,  and adds to cost of prison and welfare services. By simply following a simple linear cause and effect analysis, they have lower lifetime earnings, which reduces buying power, lowers tax revenues for governments and reduces economic growth. When you extend your analysis, it results to decreased health status, more criminal activity,  higher rates of teen pregnancy and single motherhood. Wherever you look at it, just higher costs all around.Aside from those stated, the education system has direct effect on future economic growth. A major consideration of a business to invest in a country or in a community,  is the economic impact data. Part of this data is the education achievement of the community,  along with items such as transportation and workforce development. With the present condition, we can’t hardly make the first cut because companies will see they don’t have a pipeline to supply them with the workforce they need.We can no longer deny that the manufacturing sector cannot sustain the rising need for employment, and high-tech jobs are coming on. It is expected that majority of the jobs created over the next 10 years will be high-tech. How can this country compete if many of our population didn’t even finish elementary school? We are already seeing economic development pass us. There is a clear association between obesity and low self-esteem, especially in adolescents. Humans are social animals so when a person suffers from social anxiety or social isolation it can negatively affect their ability to perform or function in their everyday lives.Social isolation may affect a child’s performance in school and thus limit their career options and earning potential later in life. After an obese child reaches six years of age, the probability that obesity will persist exceeds 50 percent, and 70 to 80 percent of obese adolescents will remain so as adults. The sonar works by detecting echoes under water since sound waves in wa ter last longer than in air. Satellite tags are also used for tracking marine life. Currently the frozen solids formed on the ocean surfaces are called islands. This shows how influential the ocean can be in the entire ecosystem. The air quality on earth is also influence by coral reefs, which are said to produce approximately 82% of the world’s oxygen while there is dissolution of carbon dioxide in the water. Coral reefs are also a source of food for marine life and a natural habitat for them. They are also a source of income as they are a site to the tourists, (Pandolfi, 2003). Therefore, lots of conservation needs to be done on marine life. There are various positive impacts of the marine life to humans. For example, it is a hub for future medical and pharmaceutical advancements. This is seen in cone snails (conidae) which are highly venomous. They produce neurotoxins which have a relaxing effect to the muscles. i.e. they are nerve inhibitors. This inhibitory action may be potential in providing alternative medications to the morphine which are significantly powerful and non-addictive. Another research advancement made in the biomedical applications is the identification of a special type of glue from a particular marine worm that tends to harden aqueous environments and seal veins and bones. This invention came from the discovery that this particular worm builds its habitat underwater by gluing up sand particles. Sponges have also been known to heal wounds faster and are thus used in surgical operations. Raw materials from the sea could also help in provision and supply of industrial and building materials, (Guldberg, 2010). I created a survey for parents of adolescents to determine how important they think it is for their teens to be educated on environmental issues. This paper will explain the purpose of the survey and discuss the preliminary design issues that I experienced while creating the survey. Then, the paper will describe how this survey should be administered, scored and interpreted. Purpose of Survey The purpose of this survey is to get parents opinions on their adolescent’s involvement in environmental issues. The reason for this survey is that even people, who conserve natural resources, recycle and help keep the community clean are not always as aware of making their adolescents do their part. It is proven that, if parents are environmental and energy friendly in their actions then their children are more prone to be as well. (Sierra, 2009). If parents take it into their own hands to educate their adolescents they can rest assured the teens will do their part. This survey will show if parents feel that their children should have to take on this responsibility, or if they should be allowed to remain childish and carefree in their actions. This survey will also distinguish is parents held themselves accountable for teaching their adolescents to be conscious of their actions and how they influence the environment. Preliminary Design Issues Issues with the design of surveys include distinguishing which questions should be asked, and if these said questions would get true responses or false answers. The questions that are asked will determine the outcome of the survey. This survey was developed for parents of adolescents. The parents may or may not par take in activities that are geared to sustain the  environment such as conserving natural resources and recycling. This survey is not about the parents themselves, however, but rather about how educated about the environment that they think their teens are and should be. This survey can be taken individually, but would yield better results if given in a group setting, with an administer present so that the questions could not be discussed among the respondents. The survey is very brief and should take no longer than 10 minutes to complete. It is a simple 12 question survey that is given in the Likert format, with the scale being 5 answers ranging from strongly disagree t o strongly agree. (Hogan, 2007). â€Å"A Likert-type scale assumes that the strength/intensity of experience is linear, i.e. on a continuum from strongly agree to strongly disagree, and makes the assumption that attitudes can be measured. Respondents may be offered a choice of five to seven or even nine pre-coded responses with the neutral point being neither agree nor disagree†. (McLeod, 2008). In my survey, there are five pre-coded responses, with the neutral point being unsure. It does not have to be a professional who administers the survey. The administer should have some knowledge in scoring and be well informed on the topic so that they may answer any questions the respondents may have. Specific Instructions for Administering, Scoring and Interpreting the Survey Individual questions will be asked to the respondents before they begin the survey. These questions will include things like name, age, gender, marital status, number of children in home, and age of adolescents. Simple questions about the respondent’s environmental views will also be asked. The only people present during the survey will be the respondents and the administrator. Since the survey has no right or wrong answers, all respondents will be urged to answer honestly so that the results will be accurate. The scoring of the survey will also be relatively simple. A five point scale, with numerical values will be issued. The assigned values will be as follows; -2 for strongly disagree, -1 for disagree, 0 for unsure, +1 for agree, and +2 for strongly agree. Once the surveys are scored the totals will be correlated. A respondent with a 0 score or mostly middle responses will be concluded as neutral or no opinion. A respondent with high scores would be seen as having favorable attitudes toward adolescents and their role in sustaining the environment. A respondent that had low scores would be seen as having a negative attitude about adolescents taking  responsibility for the environment. Then, the surveys would be tallied to determine the general attitude concerning adolescents and the environment. Conclusion This survey was created to determine the attitudes of parents with adolescents on how much responsibility the teens should have in sustaining the environment. The adolescents are the focus, but the survey will also allow results on the attitudes of the respondents as well. Colbert made his share of major fossil discoveries; he was in charge of the team that unearthed a dozen Coelophysis skeletons at Ghost Ranch, New Mexico, in 1947, and he also named Staurikosaurus, one of the earliest known dinosaurs of the late Triassic period. For 40 years, Colbert was a curator at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, where his mentor was the distinguished fossil hunter Henry Fairfield Osborn, and he wrote a series of popular books (including 1945s seminal The Dinosaur Book: The Ruling Reptiles and Their Relatives) that helped introduce baby-boomer kids to paleontology. When he was already past 60, Colbert accepted a post as curator of vertebrate paleontology at the Museum of Northern Arizona. Today, aside from Coelophysis, Colbert is best known for his 1969 discovery of the skeleton of an early therapsid, or mammal-like reptile, Lystrosaurus, in Antarctica. Before Colberts expedition, various Lystrosaurus fossils had been unearthed in South Africa, and paleontologists had come to the conclusion that this creature couldnt possibly have been a good swimmer. Colberts discovery proved that Antarctica and South Africa had once been joined in a single southern continent, Gondwana, thus lending support to the theory of continental drift (that is, that the earth’s continents have slowly been joining, separating, and moving around over the last 500 million years or so).
